Mail.ru video service broadcasting russian space launch

  Apr 6, 2007

Mail.ru will has signed a deal to broadcast the Soyuz space shuttle launch through their new online video service, video.mail.ru.

On 7 April at 21.00 Moscow time a live audience of millions of television viewers and Internet users can watch the launch of the manned spacecraft [Soyuz] from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. “We are happy to give Internet users a unique opportunity to see the spacecraft Soyuz live,” says Anna Artamonova, director of marketing Mail.Ru.

Video.mail.ru is a similar platform to Google’s YouTube, allowing users to upload and share video footage. It’s a popular service with over 73′000 videos hosted and will no doubt help to increase Mail.ru’s 6% coverage in the market. There are a few oversights in the application, notably the lack of search which leaves users browsing page-by-page within a limited directory structure. Hopefully this will be addressed by the time the product graduates from beta status.

To their credit though they have already given users the ability to link to video footage from within their own sites/blogs. With increasing interest on social media optimisation (SMO), this is certainly an application to keep an eye on in the Russian market.
