Japan and China came out big in “the face of the web”

  May 9, 2006

According to “The Face of the Web”, which was published by a market researcher Ipso Insight, Japan remains the world’s No.1 Internet based economy with about 9 in 10 said to have used the Internet in the past 30 days, and spent 14 hours in average per week online.

Chinese Internet users spent 17.9 hours per week online in average, but only 50% used the Internet in the past 30 days, compared to Japan’s 89% and Korea’s 68%.

The survey for the study was done in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, UK and USA in November and December of 2005. It shows that the global online population grew about 5% from 2004 to 2005.

Interesting post Motoko. It’s an amazing penetration rate for Japan. Do you know why that is? Does the government support internet usage or is the cost of access low? China has a lot of room for growth based on their low penetration rate and will soon have the largest number of Internet users in the world, passing the US.

Hi David, Now that many Japanese are on low cost and reliable broad band access, it definitely helps them to use Internet more often, but the main reason may be that Japanese are very much into the blogging and social networking sites now, and they cannot stay away from Internet. :)

I posted “2mil Japanese enjoy “You Tube” the other day. The research shows that most American access to You Tube from Google searches, but many Japanese are accessing to the site from social networking sites such as “mixi”.

Hi Motoko: regarding last Sifry’s State of the Blogosphere report, part 2, do you think that the figure representing the number of japanese posts, 37% worldwide, is accuarate? It looks to me like too much.

I have been in Japan and I know how powerful the internet penetration is and the email use via mobile is.

    cheers, tomy

Hi Tomy, I just posted “Japanese blog and SNS users to nearly doubled in 6 months” here. The numbers show how rapidly blog and SNS usages are growing in Japan, and I’m not surprised with 37% share at all.

Many SNS services include blog, and many people are using SNS blogs instead of chat room and BBS. Since most services can be accessed via mobile also, it’s very easy for them to go back to check the postings, replies, etc. anytime, anywhere.
