Google’s Gmail account is now available for general public without an invitation in Japan.
Currently, Google is the default search engine on mobile “au” through the tie-up with KDDI. Gmail may become “au”’s mobile mailer soon???
Gmail is also available without an invitation in Australia and New Zealand.

I’m sure you already have one or more Motoko. How long has gmail been in Japan? It’s interesting how Google is going to the public accounts now. They probably reached a point of saturation and weren’t getting many invites lately. Of course they want everybody to have a gmail account.

Hi David
Yes, I have a few.
Gmail has been available to people in Japan since the beginning. At first there were some problems with the characters in the message, but it works great now.
I’m sure Google wants more Japanese to have gmail account so that more people would use Google tools and services that require you to login with gmail account.

Motoko,
Hello, can sign up for the Japanese G-Mail in the us and when I type it will show up in Japanese? My daughter has a friend outside Tokyo who she would love to type in Japanese with?
Thank you

Hi Bob,
It’s the same “@gmail.com” that you sign up in US. You can write mails in Japanese. You can also write mails in Japanese with Yahoo, MSN, and other free emailing services.
You just need to set up the PC to able Japanese fonts.
